The main mission of Business Informatics Department is to conduct  research as well as didactic on decision support systems, management information systems, business process management,  project management, and using IT application in different kinds of organizations.

The members of the team published over 300 different works, among others: monographs, contributed monographs, research papers, manual chapters, as well as implementation projects. These works appeared in main Polish publishing houses (PWN, Difin, C. H. Beck), in university volumes (University of Economics in Wrocław, Warsaw School of Economics, University of Warsaw, University of Gdańsk), in journals (PrzeglądOrganizacji, Organizacja i Kierowanie, Informatyka, Computerworld), and abroad (Kluwer Academic, Springer, IGI Global, Informing Science References, Informing Science Institute Publisher, The Journal of Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Interdisciplinary Journal of Information, Knowledge & Management).

The department members actively participate in many scientific conferences, both national and international ones. They also did many internships and research stays abroad (ETH, Zuerich, Swiss; Trier University, Germany; Vien University, Austria; Salford University, England; Victoria University, Melbourne, Australian; Macon State College, School of Information Technology, USA). They are members of Polish Academy of Sciences, Polish Computer Society, Polish Economic Society, Polish Production Management Society, Business Informatics Scientific Society, as well as PGV Net, Informing Science Institute, Santa Rosa, California; Associate Editor International Business Research, Canada; Association for Information Systems, USA; International Board of Reviewers for the Interdisciplinary Journal of Information, Knowledge and Management, Issues in Informing Science & Information Technology, and Information Systems Management.

The department cooperates with practitioners and with IT business in the Silesia region, these are among others: SKG S.A., BPSC, SAP, and Informatyczne Systemy Przemysłowe UNICO Sp. z o.o.  As part of the above cooperation, the following certified trainings for our team members were organized:

• Business process design using SAP BO – Katowice, September 2007.
• Audit of information resources, ACL – Katowice, 2008.
• Integrated Management Information Systems, IMPULS BPSC, Chorzów, February 1-5, 2008, and July 2-8, 2009.

The members of the department participate also in the Group for , Implementation and Monitoring of the Strategy of Information Society Development for the Silesian Voivodeship, they are consultants of the Silesian Centre of Information Society, established in Marshal’s Office in Katowice, and experts of the commission for projects assessment in Regional Operational Program for Silesian Voivodeship. They also prepare expert opinions for the National Centre for Research and Development, National Science Centre, and Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
