Two semesters (160 hours) – studies are conducted in English and Polish.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDIES

The presented curriculum was created in response to the demand of the labour market for specialists with diversified competences. The Polish labour market, especially the market of corporation jobs, needs specialists who have not only industry, but also multi-cultural and linguistic competences. The Business English programme is unique because of its location at the interface between management and English philology.

As part of the Business English programme, specialist subjects relating to business allow students to explore the secrets of moving in contemporary corporations, planning their careers, marketing and team management, while subjects relating to learning English allow to broaden knowledge and, above all, communication skills in this language, spoken and written, in a variety of professional situations. The studies are entirely in English, which gives the students the opportunity to develop. Moreover, students learn professional English-language terminology, as well as train the use of international business discourse.

Subjects in the field of management and marketing are in English by both research and teaching staff as well as practitioners dealing with this area. On the other hand, subjects relating to the learning of business English, commercial correspondence or intercultural communication are taught by English-speakers with experience in publishing in the field of business issues. The studies put great on the so-called soft skills that are highly valued in the modern labour market (e.g. interpersonal communication, public speech, social influence and coping with stress).

The current modified curriculum of studies was based on the experience of managers, external stakeholders with whom it was consulted, as well as suggestions from students who evaluate a curriculum every year as part of anonymous evaluation. On the basis of the evaluation results, the curriculum is modified on a regular basis, and a scheduled rotation takes place in the lecturers’ team. It allows to provide high level education and development in a competitive educational market.

Subjects have been divided into four thematic modules. Each module is completed with a theoretical and practical exam. In the practical part, the students have the opportunity to demonstrate their acquired skills, and the exam tasks are a response to the market demand (e.g. preparing sales presentations, applying for a position in an international corporation, etc.). The acquired knowledge, skills and experience constitute significant assets for the graduates in the labour market. Among our graduates, we have observed very dynamic careers, first of all in large and medium-sized companies with headquarters or branches in Poland.

RECIPIENTS

The studies are addressed to graduates of all higher education faculties who would like – in response to the needs of the labour market – to improve their competences in effective communication in English and to efficiently navigate through the business world, including the international one. Both graduates of faculties including social sciences (e.g. economic sciences, sociology, psychology), who want to increase their competence in communication in English (with particular emphasis on business language), as well as graduates of philological or humanities majors who would like to broaden knowledge and business skills take advantage of these studies. Our studies are recommended by graduates to all those who want to be quickly promoted in corporations, which illustrates the recommendations we received:

BENEFITS

The studies are entirely in English and that allows students to improve communication in this language and acquire specialist terminology. Studies are located at the interface between business and philological sciences. Although the studies are entirely in English, their price is competitive in comparison to other postgraduate programmes. Methods of conducting classes are activating. The lectures have been reduced to a minimum, and the majority of classes has the form of workshops, trainings and didactic simulations. Our graduates emphasise that Business English studies create the opportunity to establish interesting business relationships due to their interdisciplinary nature.

FINAL DOCUMENT (certificates and authorisations)

Certificate of completing postgraduate studies issued by the University of Economics in Katowice.

ASSUMPTIONS OF STUDIES

The main objective of the studies is to extend the students’ competence in using English and marketing and management techniques at work at positions relating to business.

In particular, the curriculum is focused on the development of skills and knowledge in the areas of:

  • using English with the use of various communication channels and techniques with specialists in the field of trade and business,
  • preparing oral presentations in English on various business issues,
  • preparing typical written compilations (e.g. business correspondence) in English,
  • independent planning of innovative business projects and raising funds (especially EU funds) for these projects,
  • specifics of the business language,
  • marketing techniques – including sales, negotiation and interpersonal communication techniques,
  • basics of business and personnel management.

METHODS FOR CONDUCTING CLASSES

Classes are mainly conducted with activating methods. The number of lectures is limited to the necessary minimum, and the classes have mostly the form of workshops, trainings and didactic games. During classes, students discuss case studies, they are discussing using the brainstorming method.

The students are encouraged to participate in classes actively, and the atmosphere of the classes is conducive to the exchange of ideas and shared experiences. Exams are not only theoretical but also practical, where the students, e.g., record a public speech, participate in a simulated interview for a real position in a corporation, etc. Thanks to this formula of classes, students not only develop their competences better but also establish business and interpersonal relations.
