Bibliography of scientific output

The Expertus bibliographic and bibliometric system is the Main Library's own database, created by the staff at the Bibliometry, Documentation and Computerization Section. It lists publications by our University's employees and people affiliated with the UE in Katowice. It allows for creating search queries using many criteria, filtering the results and creating bibliometric analysis and rankings. The database includes bibliographic descriptions of materials published since 1994. Earlier publications are included in the printed bibliography, which is available in the Śląska Biblioteka Cyfrowa (Silesian Digital Library).  The statistical module (Bibliometrics) generates reports based on data about publications entered into the system. The EXPERTUS system is the only source from which data is exported to the Polish Scientific Bibliography (PBN, Polska Bibliografia Naukowa)

About the Consortium

In 1993, on the initiative of the Cracow University of Economics, the idea of creating field-specific databases indexing journals (database ''Ekonomia" [Economics]) and publishing series (database "Zeszyty Naukowe" [Working Papers], and, from 2000, “Nauki Społeczne” [Social Sciences]) in the field of economic sciences emerged.

Initially, the databases were created on the basis of the MAK integrated library system. In 2003, the process of transferring databases to a new platform based on the PostgreSQL database engine began. First the interface for the readers was launched, then in 2005 the interface for data entry.

In 2004, the database structure was expanded to include the Literature field. This field contains references cited by the author. In the case of the "Economics" database, literature cited was attached to bibliographic records from "scored" journals (i.e. journals for which authors of published articles receive points). In the Social Sciences database this applied to all articles entered since 2004.

In June 2010, following the merging the Economy and Social Sciences databases, BazEkon was established. This merger also marked the beginning of a number of changes. First of all, the appearance of the database changed, becoming more user friendly. The search has also changed, divided into simple - i.e. the search term only and advanced - combining several indices (author, title, keywords, source, country/region, company/organization, language, year of publication, literature, term, available in). The option for narrowing the search to a specific collection: journals or working papers was retained.

In September 2010, at the meeting of the Consortium of Libraries of Economics Faculties in Poland, which took place in Wrocław, the Main Library of the Cracow University of Economics (BG UEK) invited other economics academic libraries to collaborate (the Library of the Warsaw School of Economics, the Main Library of the University of Economics in Katowice, the Main Library of University of Economics in Poznań, the Main Library of the Wrocław University of Economics). One of the conditions for participation was that these libraries were to guarantee access to the full texts of articles from journals published by the universities and adapt the way they work in the database to the procedures used at the BG UEK.

Until the end of 2010, access to the BazEkon database was controlled via the IP. Interested libraries had to buy an annual subscription. Once the last round of subscription agreements ended, BazEkon became open access.

Since 2011, the database has been developed by BG UEK in collaboration with the Main Library of the Wrocław University of Economics, the Main Library of the Poznań University of Economics and the Library of the Warsaw School of Economics.

In 2012, institutions that expressed willingness to collaborate signed an agreement - creating the BazEkon Consortium. The agreement sets out the principles of cooperation between the institutions - the Partners of the BazEkon Consortium. The purpose of the BazEkon Consortium is to continue and develop consortium projects. The Main Library of the Cracow University of Economics became the coordinator.

In 2013, the Consortium was joined by the Main Library of the University of Economics in Katowice and the Specialist Library of the University of Szczecin: the Economics Library of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management and the Library of the Faculty of Management and Service Economics.

In 2015, an agreement was signed on continuing collaboration in creating the BazEkon database until October 31, 2018.

Citations

Bibliometric analysis uses the following comparative measures of scientific output:
- number of publications
- number of citations  (total number of citations, mean number of citations)
- Hirsch index (created by sorting articles by the number of citations and selecting the last position for which the number of citations is greater than or equal to the position)

The most important websites providing information on the citations of articles published in scientific journals:

  • WoS CITATIONS based on the Expertus database.  Citations analysis is carried out by the employees of the Bibliometrics, Documentation and Computerization Section. Citations refer only to publications registered in the Expertus database.  There are citations available for years 2015, 2016, 2017. The work is ongoing
  • CITATIONS in BazEkon - is a bibliometrics program of the Publish or Perish type, which processes literature references for articles listed in BazEkon. The program calculates the basic bibliometric measures (Hirsch index and number of citations) for authors and journals appearing in these references. The program has been developed by the employees of the Main Library of the Cracow University of Economics. The program works only on indexed (processed) references. Therefore, the program header provides daily updated information on what part of the entire set of references the results are based on. At the same time, when viewing each result, it is possible to check the number of occurrences of a phrase (author's or journal's name) in not-yet-indexed citations. This gives authors and journal publishers the opportunity to calculate the indicators themselves.

The number of citations in the database changes continuously as Bazekon fills up with new records. If there are unprocessed citations next to the employee's name, please contact us to update the data. Citations are not processed automatically by the system, a manual correction by a librarian is needed here. With thousands of citations incoming to the database every day, it is not possible to process all citations immediately.

All information about citations regarding employees of the University of Economics in Katowice in BazEkon is provided by employees of the Bibliometry, Documentation and Computerization Section at the Main Library, tel. 32 786 5132, biblioteka.in@ue.katowice.pl

  • Publish or Perish - a program that calculates bibliometric indicators, among others the h-index, the number of citations based on publications indexed in Google Scholar, created by Anne Wil-Harzing
  •  Google Scholar Citations - a service launched in July 2011, based on data from Google Scholar. It is a service that allows us to set up our profile ("Author's profile") in Google Scholar and allows us to track where and by whom our works are cited, as well as gives the ability to automatically calculate our H index. Thus, the starting point for using Citations is having some of your work listed in Google databases
  • We encourage you to read our guide to Google Scholar
  • Scopus - an interdisciplinary database of abstracts and citations in the field of mathematics, natural, technical and medical sciences and humanities produced by Elsevier. Scopus includes over 19,500 publication titles, including over 18,500 peer-reviewed journals (of which more than 1,800 are available in the Open Access system), over 400 commercial publications, 300 book series, 250 conference reports. The database contains over 46 million bibliographic records, of which 25 million have citations dating back to 1996, as well as 25 million patent records, and indexes scientific websites. More than half of the journals in the Scopus database come from outside the US.
  • Web of Science - the Web of Knowledge database package produced by Thomson Reuters has been available since 2010 under a national academic license. The license includes the Web of Science (WoS) package, which contains 3 citation indexes: Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE since 1945), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI since 1956), Art and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI since 1975). In addition, the license includes an additional citation index of the Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI, including the Science and Social parts since 1990) and the Journal Citation Reports JCR (access to the latest published year). The set of databases is available on the Web of Science platform on the publisher's server. Records in citation indexes contain abstracts, basic bibliographic information, and information on citations in journals on the Master Journal List (the so-called Philadelphia List). The criteria that must be met by journals indexed in WoS and the process of selecting journals can be found at The Thomson Reuters Journal Selection Process. Since 2010, articles from over 12,000 current journal titles have been indexed in WoS databases. JCR includes a bibliometric assessment of the citability of scientific journals, and provides the Impact Factor indicator. About 150,000 conference reports are indexed in the CPCI database. The Medline database and additional EndNote Web and Researcher ID tools are also available via the Web of Knowledge platform. You can learn more about Thomson products from a document prepared by the Publisher.

CitEc Citations in Economics - citations of publications available in the RePEc repository.

MathSciNet - citations of publications mainly in the fields of mathematics, statistics and engineering.

Basic comparative measures used to assess the "quality" of scientific journals:

1. The Impact Factor index - the magazine's citation index - this is the ratio of the number of citations received in a given year by articles published in this journal in the previous two years, to the total number of articles published in the journal during the same period; IF indicators are included in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database.

2. Ministry points score

3. Hirsch index - informs how many publications from a given journal in a given year were cited h and more times

4. index Copernicus - indicator of journal quality based on the validation of approximately 30 parameters grouped in five categories: scientific value, editorial diligence, coverage, frequency, regularity and market stability, technical diligence. This indicator is quite often used, especially for journals that are not on the Philadelphia List, but count in the medical publishing market.

The above indicators are found in:

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) Science Edition
Journal Citation Reports
(JCR) Social Sciences Edition
The current list of journals with IF indicators for a given year appears in the middle of the following year.

Philadelphia List - Master Journal List - a list of journals and scientific series developed and updated by Thomson Reuters. The list includes titles that have passed the evaluation process and are included in the ISI Web of Knowledge database. The bibliographic data of the journal included in the list contain only the journal title, frequency of publication, ISSN, publisher's address and databases in which it is indexed. The Philadelphia List does not provide the Impact Factor indicator for listed journals.
The Minister of Science and Higher Education publishes on the Ministry's website a list of “scored” journals (for which points are awarded), consisting of three parts and containing respectively:
