International Women’s Day Conference in Economics, Finance and Management [report]

On March 7-8, 2024, the fourth edition of the International Women's Day Conference in Economics, Finance and Management took place at our university. Speakers from three different continents - Europe, Africa, and North America - had a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience and building international scientific networks.

As in previous years, the aim of the conference was to promote pluralism in science, to seek synergies arising from the diversity of research problems addressed and methods used, and to give scientists the opportunity to present and discuss their research results.

The conference was opened by the Vice-Rector for Development and Cooperation with the Environment, Prof. Robert Wolny. Prof. Lára Jóhannsdóttir (University of Iceland) delivered the keynote lecture entitled "Businesses a cause, victims, and solution to the climate crisis."

During parallel sessions, speakers addressed topics including the impact of business on the state of the environment, disruptive technological innovations, the implementation of sustainable development principles in the context of climate change, problems of public and personal finance, and the role of women in the labor market and business.

At the end of the first day of the conference, Dr. Aleksandra Kardaś (Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Climate Education, atmospheric physicist) gave a lecture entitled "Climate change. You can't negotiate with physics". The lecture served as a prelude to a panel discussion entitled "Climate change in economic education", in which the panelists were Prof. Lára Jóhannsdóttir (University of Iceland), Dr. Aleksandra Kardaś (Climate Education Foundation), Prof. Monika Wieczorek-Kosmala, Prof. of the EU (University of Economics in Katowice). The discussion was moderated by Prof. Zofia Lapniewska (Jagiellonian University).

The panel discussion was held as part of the "Task force for education in economics of climate change" - one of the components of the REACCT - Reflecting Economics And Climate Change In Teaching project. The project is funded by the Erasmus+ KA220-HED - Cooperation partnerships in higher education program.

During the conference, the Best Paper Award ("Best Paper Award") was also presented. Out of 10 articles submitted for the competition, the jury decided to award the article "Is There No Women in Investment? - Exploring Gender Differences in Investment Behavior in Germany" (by Carolin Dylla and Dorothea Ries, Berlin School of Economics and Law).

The rooms, both virtual and physical on the fifth floor of the CNTI building, were filled to capacity during almost each session by representatives of various research centers and students from the University of Economics in Katowice. During the two days, the conference hosted more than 400 people from 15 countries (both remotely and in person).

The conference featured 80 speakers who presented a total of 68 papers.

The conference was organized by the Department of Economics, the Department of Strategic and Regional Studies with the support by the Center for Economics of Climate Change.
