World Consumer Rights Day 2024 [report]

On March 14th, on the eve of World Consumer Rights Day, the University of Economics in Katowice celebrated this important day for the entire community and all consumers. For this occasion, a panel discussion with industry experts titled "Fair and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Consumer Relations" was organized, along with a competition for students, which was concluded on that day. The gathered guests and participants were welcomed by Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D.

Celebration of World Consumer Rights Day

The aim of World Consumer Rights Day is to deepen consumer and business awareness among students and graduates. On this day, consumer organizations remind all market participants of their rights and responsibilities.

On this occasion, at the University of Economics in Katowice, aiming to introduce the idea of this day to the entire academic community, a panel discussion titled "Fair and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Consumer Relations" was organized, along with a special competition for students and doctoral students.

The gathered guests and participants in the CNTI Auditorium were welcomed by Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D., who at the beginning of his speech introduced the panel discussion guests and then outlined the origins of World Consumer Rights Day.

The panel discussion was attended by:

  1. Krzysztof Lehmann - Deputy Director, Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, Branch in Bydgoszcz;
  2. Krzysztof Pławecki - President of the Management Board, Lex Cultura Foundation;
  3. Hubert Plichta - Board Member, Lex Cultura Foundation;
  4. Cezary Sowiński - Public Policy Manager, Amazon;
  5. Prof. Jan Kozak - Head of the Department of Machine Learning at UE Katowice.

The discussion was moderated by Prof. Jolanta Zrałek from the Department of Consumer Research.

The invited experts discussed the development of modern technologies, the main manifestation of which is the widespread use of artificial intelligence in both business activities and the daily lives of individuals. Conversations also addressed misinformation, privacy breaches, and discriminatory practices, as well as how AI-based platforms can spread false information and perpetuate biases.

Competition resolution

As part of the World Consumer Rights Day celebrations, students at the University of Economics in Katowice were invited to participate in a competition involving the creation of a short social media video commenting on selected consumer rights issues in an interesting way.

Cash prizes of I, II, and III degree were awarded to:

  • 1st degree prize - Julia Uszok for the film "Consumer Rights";
  • 2nd degree prize - Krzysztof Dyaczyński for the film "Consumer rights - important!";
  • 3rd degree prize - Paulina Niebudek for the film "How does AI affect consumption - are our rights at risk?"; 

UE Katowice Honorable Mentions went to:

  • Emilia Wiekiera for the film "New tools, new challenges: artificial intelligence";
  • Martino Nardone for the film "Breaking down EU's Geoblocking law";
  • Klaudia Gorzawska for the film "Breaking consumer rights through artificial intelligence";
  • Magdalena Gondzik for the film "Unfair practices of services and internet practices";

Lex Cultura Foundation Honorable Mentions went to:

  • Agnieszka Rutkowska for the film "Threats of artificial intelligence";
  • Marta Warczek for the film "Careless shopping";
  • Oktawian Gajewicz for the film "Are you a conscious consumer? QUIZ".

Congratulations to all the winners!

The event concluded with a workshop titled "Consumer Safety Online," led by trainers from the Lex Cultura Foundation.
