Two semesters (160 hours) – studies are conducted in English.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDIES

A unique offer - English-language postgraduate studies at the University of Economics in Katowice at the price of regular studies. Interactive classes. During the pandemic we successfully conducted classes remotely and received recommendations for them.

High level of participant satisfaction supported by recommendations – to see recommendations click here: www.ue.katowice.pl/jednostki/katedry/kiik/katedra-zarzadzania-relacjami-organizacji/rekomendacje/opinie-sluchaczy-studiow-podyplomowych-business-english.html

The presented curriculum has been developed in response to the labour market demand for specialists with diversified competences. The Polish labour market, especially the corporate jobs market, needs specialists possessing not only industry-specific competences, but also multicultural and linguistic ones. What makes the Business English studies unique is their location between business studies and English philology.

As part of the Business English curriculum, specialist business-related subjects enable participants to gain insight into the secrets of operating in today's corporations, planning their own careers, marketing and managing a team, while subjects related to the study of English broaden their knowledge and, above all, their ability to communicate in this language both orally and in writing.

The course is taught entirely in English, which gives participants the opportunity to develop their ability to communicate in English in a variety of professional situations. In addition, participants learn professional English terminology and are trained in the use of international business discourse.

The subjects in the field of business are taught in English by both research and teaching staff as well as practitioners dealing with this area, while the subjects related to the study of business English, business correspondence or intercultural communication are taught by English philology educators who also have research experience in business issues. The studies put a strong emphasis on the so-called soft skills, which are highly valued in today's job market (e.g. interpersonal communication, public speaking, exerting social influence and dealing with stress).

The current, modified study programme is based on the experience of managers, external stakeholders with whom it was consulted, as well as suggestions from participants who evaluate the study programme every year in anonymous evaluations. Based on the evaluation results, the programme is modified on an ongoing basis and there is a planned rotation in the team of lecturers. This allows for the provision of quality education and development in a competitive educational market.

The subjects are divided into four thematic subjects/modules, and each module ends with a theoretical and practical exam. In the practical part, participants have the opportunity to demonstrate their acquired skills, and the exam tasks are in response to market demand (e.g. preparing promotional presentations, applying for a given position in an international corporation, etc.). The knowledge, skills and experience gained are an important asset for graduates on the labour market. We have observed very dynamic careers among our previous graduates, especially in large and medium-sized companies with their headquarters or branches in Poland.

RECIPIENTS

The studies are addressed to graduates of all fields of higher education who would like to improve their competences in English in response to labour market demands, in order to be able to communicate effectively in English and move efficiently in the world of business, including international business.

The studies are used both by graduates of social sciences (e.g. economics, sociology, psychology) who would like to improve their competences in English communication (with a special emphasis on the language of business) and graduates of philology/humanities who would like to broaden their knowledge and skills in business. Our studies are recommended by graduates to all those who wish to advance rapidly in corporations, which is illustrated by the recommendations we have received:

ue.katowice.pl/jednostki/katedry/wiik/katedra-zarzadzania-relacjami-organizacji/rekomendacje/opinie-sluchaczy-studiow-podyplomowych-business-english

BENEFITS

  • The studies are conducted entirely in English, which allows participants to improve their communication in this language and to acquire specialist terminology.
  • The studies are located at the intersection of business and philological sciences, which allows for a synergistic effect in teaching and simultaneous exploration of knowledge and skills in many areas.
  • Although the studies are conducted entirely in English, their price is competitive in relation to other postgraduate studies.
  • Methods of conducting classes are activating, lectures have been reduced to the necessary minimum, and most classes are held in the form of workshops, trainings and didactic simulations.
  • Our graduates emphasise that Business English studies provide the opportunity to establish interesting business relationships due to their interdisciplinary nature.

FINAL DOCUMENT (certificates and authorisations)

Certificate of completion of postgraduate studies issued by the University of Economics in Katowice.

ASSUMPTIONS OF STUDIES

The main objective of the studies is to extend students' competences in the use of English language and marketing and management techniques in business-related positions.

In particular, the study programme is focused on the development of skills and knowledge in:

  • using English with the use of various communication channels and techniques with specialists in the field of trade and business,
  • preparation of oral presentations in English on various business issues,
  • preparation of typical written materials (e.g. business correspondence) in English,
  • independently plan innovative business projects and obtain funds (especially EU funds) for these projects,
  • use of business English in a variety of situations,
  • use of marketing techniques, including sales techniques, negotiations and interpersonal communication,
  • applying knowledge of business management, including the development of concepts for running one's own business.

METHODS FOR CONDUCTING CLASSES

Classes are conducted primarily by means of active methods. The number of lectures has been reduced to a necessary minimum, and classes are mostly conducted in the form of workshops, trainings and didactic games. Case studies and brainstorming discussions are applied during classes.

Students are encouraged to take an active part in the classes and the atmosphere is conducive to the exchange of ideas and common experiences. The exams are not only theoretical, but also practical, where participants e.g. record a public speech, take part in a simulated job interview for a real position in a corporation, participate in simulated business situations, etc.

Thanks to this formula of classes, participants not only better develop their competences, but also establish business and interpersonal relations.

Note: During a "lockdown" (e.g. due to a coronavirus pandemic) we effectively conduct classes remotely, which is reflected in the recommendations obtained by our participants during semesters when classes were conducted exclusively remotely.

Digital Media, Fact-checking and Disinformation - New

Two semesters (144 hours) – studies are conducted in English

    DESCRIPTION OF STUDIES

The postgraduate program in Digital Media, Fact-checking and Disinformation is a prestigious and unique course in our country, the program of which was created within the framework of the project "European cooperation project on disinformation and fact-checking training. Empowering current and future media and media education professionals, to identify, prevent, and combat fake news spread over digital networks - Fact-checking" in cooperation of a consortium of seven European economic universities.

The dissemination of false information has never before in history reached such a scale. The multiplicity of message recipients, the diversity of topics, the speed and frequency of their spread, the worldwide geographic scope, the number and diversity of actors involved, and their impact on all sectors of society make this undoubtedly an unusual phenomenon. Disinformation campaigns affect or harm, to varying degrees and for varying purposes, citizens, businesses, private and public organizations, states and international organizations.

The postgraduate studies are intended to educate specialists who will not only have interdisciplinary knowledge of digital media, disinformation and fact-checking, but will also be specialists able to apply this knowledge in practice, within their professional and social activities.

The emphasis on the formation of practical skills is reflected in the study program, which has a large share of workshop classes (exercises) conducted using diverse and modern didactic methods branches in Poland.

Verification of language proficiency will take place during the interview. Persons with a language certificate confirming the knowledge of English at least B2 level and persons with English as their native language will be exempt from the interview.

    BENEFITS

One of the most important benefits for those who choose the Digital Media, Fact-checking and Disinformation major is its uniqueness in our country and its professional preparation for positions related to identifying and countering disinformation. At present, there is no comparable offer of postgraduate studies in the Polish educational market that prepares participants for the role of a specialist in analyzing and countering disinformation in digital media. The added value of the studies on the course is also reflected in:

    • their internationalization - participants have the opportunity to contact and establish cooperation with an international team of lecturers and engage in international projects on digital media and disinformation, gain access to benchmark practical solutions (benchmark), and thus build lasting relationships with a group of experts dealing with the issue of disinformation in digital media,
    • their interdisciplinary nature - just like the concept of disinformation itself, this field of study combines knowledge from various scientific disciplines, i.e. economics (media economics), management, law, communication and media sciences, psychology,
    • opportunities to increase participants' English language competence,
    • opportunities to develop practical skills in the areas of, identifying fake news/disinformation, spreading fake news and combating it - thanks to the offer of expert classes implemented in an interactive, workshop format.
