[CIMA] University Management Accounting Day CEE 2020 - summary

On 21 October 2020 students from universities from Poland and other countries had a chance to meet for the third time as part of the University Management Accounting Day (UMAD). It was an event organised by CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, in collaboration with prestigious universities of economics.

With over 228,000 members and students in 179 countries, CIMA (The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants®) is the leading and largest organisation in the world that brings together specialists and experts in management accounting. CIMA qualifications are offered as part of CIMA & University Program and provide students with upskilling opportunities in the area of business (how to transform data into knowledge and strategy), interpersonal skills (how to communicate, make an impact, negotiate and collaborate), leadership (how to build and motivate teams and stimulate performance), and technical expertise (how to apply accounting and financial skills) - and all this while observing the highest standards of ethics, integrity and professionalism. At CIMA we follow all the current trends, hence in January 2019 we updated the syllabus to adapt it to the latest trends in the area of finance. This allows CIMA members and students to develop their digital skills, which these days have taken a completely new role. The curriculum has been extended to include such topics as digital costing, cybersecurity, data analytics, data visualisation and data strategy. Thanks to these new areas, the CIMA syllabus is now recognised worldwide as the most up-to-date programme in the area of management accounting.

One event dedicated to students is the University Management Accounting Day CEE organised in CIMA partner universities and addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students of finance and accounting. This event brings together students, lecturers, best CIMA's employers and employees in Poland and abroad. Attendees can learn about the role of management accounting and its importance for business.

This year, for the first time, the event was held entirely online and was attended by 200 students from such countries as: Poland, Czechia, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, United States, Portugal, Pakistan, Hungary, Turkey, United Kingdom, Russian Federation, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, and Egypt. Participants took part in a very interesting lecture: "Human Signals: New Patterns of Behaviour and the Accounting Profession [the COVID-19 crisis]" conducted by Mr Sławomir Huss, Head of Signify Capital, Europe.

Just like last year, an important part of the event was the CIMA Business Game - an interactive online competition between students from all participating universities. This time students were faced with the Mackintosh Grant case study. It was a great opportunity to solve business issues and develop some important skills. Students from Warsaw School of Economics (Poland) took first place in the business game, second place went to University of Economics in Katowice (Poland) and third to Prague College (Czechia).
