The University fully realises the idea of lifelong learning, also included in our program slogan: blisko – międzynarodowo – przez całe życie (nearby – international – lifetime). Bearing in mind the important role of the University in educating society, we teach children, youth and seniors and promote the right attitudes among the society.
What is more, the University's research and teaching staff popularise knowledge and science through expert statements for the media. They comment and explain the social and economic processes and phenomena in the fields of economics, finance, insurances, management, IT and communication, administration or broadly understood business.
Examples of campaigns and projects:
- Nationwide project "Declaration of Universities for Social Responsibility"
The Declaration of Universities for Social Responsibility is a voluntary involvement of universities in Poland in promoting the idea of sustainable development and social responsibility in educational programs, research as well as management and organisational solutions of universities.
The initiative of the Declaration of Universities for Social Responsibility was inaugurated in 2017, during the conference titled: “Social Responsibility of Science – challenges for the academic community and business", held at the then Ministry of Development. At that time, the first signatories joined the Declaration; currently there are 23 of them.
The University of Economics in Katowice is not a signatory, but HM Rector has officially expressed readiness to join the Declaration, and it will be ceremonially signed during the conference currently being organised on this subject (probably September 2019).
The University's staff are involved in work as Members of the Working Group for Social Responsibility of Universities appointed as part of the Team for Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility at the Ministry of Investment and Development in Warsaw. These employees represented the University at previous meetings of the Working Group in the Ministry. Discussions on the directions of activities were held and essential arrangements for further actions were made during the meetings. Currently, the Working Group focuses on the following areas:
- Preparation of a catalogue of good practices of socially responsible universities (examples of good practices of UEKat were sent via the on-line form to the Ministry in March 2019)
- Development of the initiative of the Declaration of Universities for Social Responsibility, organisation of a conference event and work on extending the group of the signatories of the Declaration.
- Support for the National Receipt Lottery
The University officially supports the National Receipt Lottery (NLP) as the first higher education facility in Poland. By joining this pro-social campaign, UEKat encourages to support fair competition and entrepreneurs, and to participate in the Lottery. The NLP is one of the educational campaigns of the Ministry of Finance. Its aim is to make the Poles aware of their great role in fair trade. By taking receipts people support fair entrepreneurs and fair competition. Remembering about them during shopping, at a restaurant, hairdresser’s or mechanic brings benefits not only to consumers, but also improves the way the country works.
- The conference inaugurating the Social Economy Week
On 19 June 2017, a conference titled "Tools and instruments for building the image of social economy entities in public space” was held under the Honorary Patronage of HM Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice.

The conference also contributed to the strengthening and development of inter-institutional cooperation between the entities operating in the social economy sector and in its environment.
The conference opened the Social Economy Week in the region. The event was co-financed under the project "Cooperation pays off – coordination of the social economy sector in the Silesian Voivodeship".
