On May 12, students of Financial Analyst 2.0 and Finance and Accounting participated in a study visit to the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The undertaking was carried out as part of the GPW Foundation project "Student sessions on the Marketplace", and its organizers were employees of the Department of Corporate Finance and Insurance - dr inż. Iwona Gorzeń-Mitka, dr Małgorzata Lipowicz, mgr Anna Sikora and mgr Krzysztof Pałęga.
The aim of the study visit was to deepen students' practical knowledge of the growing importance of ESG issues in the management and financing of enterprises, as well as to broaden their knowledge of the principles of the functioning of the capital market in Poland - in particular the organization and activities of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, the structure of its operation and the specificity of listed financial instruments.
The program of the visit included a tour of the GPW headquarters, screening of film materials presenting the history of the institution, and participation in two expert lectures.
The first lecture, entitled "GPW in practice. Market mechanisms and importance for the economy" was delivered by Piotr Kawalec (GPW Market Development Department). During the lecture, issues related to the organization and functioning of the Stock Exchange were presented. Participants familiarized themselves with, among others, the organizational structure of the GPW, the principles of stock exchange trading and the specificity of selected financial instruments. In particular, investment strategies aimed at novice investors were discussed, which met with great interest from the audience.
The second lecture, entitled "ESG and the financing and functioning of enterprises", was delivered by Karolina Studniarek (GPW Sustainable Development Team).
In her speech, she presented the key assumptions of the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) concept, current regulatory requirements in the field of non-financial reporting and challenges related to the implementation of sustainable practices in business activities. The subject of the lecture was particularly important both from the perspective of didactic classes conducted by Dr. Eng. Iwona Gorzeń-Mitka as part of the subject "Corporate Social Responsibility", and scientific research conducted by employees of the Department of Corporate Finance and Business Insurance in the area of ESG transformation.
Both speeches were met with great interest from the audience, which was reflected in their activity during the question and answer session.
