HR Excellence in Research – A European Quality Mark for Research Institutions
The HR Excellence in Research award is a prestigious quality label granted by the European Commission under the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R). Its purpose is to promote excellence in working conditions and career development for researchers, as well as to ensure transparency and fairness in recruitment processes aligned with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.

Award Criteria and Process
To receive the HR Excellence label, institutions must undergo a detailed accreditation process that includes:
- Compliance with all 40 principles of the European Charter for Researchers – institutions must address and implement all principles, not just selected ones.
- Evaluation of implementation quality – independent.
- On-site visit and qualitative audit – The institution undergoes a visit by experts who conduct interviews with representatives of various stakeholder groups.
- Preparation of a GAP Analysis and Action Plan – A key element in the evaluation process and in planning further development.
- Continuous improvement – Institutions are required to systematically report on and update their actions within the framework of the HRS4R strategy.
The European Charter for Researchers
As of January 2024, a revised document titled "The European Charter for Researchers" has replaced the former Charter and Code. The new version reflects the evolving needs of the research community and addresses new challenges related to research careers and mobility.
