About the project
The "Household attitudes towards energy resources mining investments" project is aimed at supporting young scientists in conducting scientific research by financing the costs related to the collection, processing and analysis of empirical data, including disseminating the results of the research in the national and international scientific community and among residents and entrepreneurs operating in the Metropolis GZM area.
This study aims to investigate the attitudes of households towards both abandoning and initiating investments in energy resource extraction. The energy transition is not only achieved by ceasing to extract fossil fuels, but also by implementing new investments as substitutes for previously completed projects. In addition, these are phased measures: in the near future, investments in fossil fuel extraction will not be abandoned. Thus, the inevitability of the transition necessitates adjustments that households must adapt to and bear the consequences of, while also ensuring they feel a sense of influence over energy policy and the implementation of their expressed needs. Identifying household attitudes in this area can be helpful in supporting public policy decisions.
The research task will be conducted by mgr Michał Mrowiec, and involves the following activities:
- analysis of relevant literature (national and international) covered by the research task;
- development of original scientific research on the intertemporal preferences of residents of Metropolis GZM;
- preparation and analysis of statistical data collected as part of the research task;
- presentation of research results at renowned national and international scientific conferences;
- preparation of a scientific paper presenting the results of the research;
- popularization of research results among residents of Metropolis GZM (e.g., in the form of public lectures, participation in popular science events, etc.).
The project coordinator is dr hab. Monika Foltyn-Zarychta, prof. UE. This project is part of the "ECOnomics4Climate III" cluster project implemented by Prof. Foltyn-Zarychta, with the support of Internationalization.
The "Household attitudes towards energy resources mining investments" project has been co-financed by the Metropolis GZM within the framework of the "Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund" program for years 2022-2024. The total grant amount is PLN 31,005.00.
Project implementation period: March – November 2025.

Key findings from the research:
- Energy resource reserves constitute a factor that has a positive impact on a country’s energy security.
- Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable decline in the share of non-renewable sources within the energy consumption mix.
- During periods of crisis for the economy or society, there is a noticeable increase in reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
- The decarbonisation process is probably not an absolute priority, but it is sensitive to factors other than environmental ones, including national security.
- Polish society is inclined to invest in renewable energy sources and to limit investment in non-renewable energy sources, primarily for energy security reasons.
In fulfilment of the project’s requirements regarding the dissemination of research findings in the form of academic publications, a research paper entitled "Energy policy and mining investments in energy resources in Poland – households’ perspective – selected aspects" has been prepared and published.
This publication has been compiled as a summary of the entire research process. The research problem has been approached from the perspective of energy policy. The first part of the publication is based on a review of the literature and data concerning energy resource reserves in Poland. Additionally, the issue of resource abundance, including technological aspects and the economic conditions of energy resource extraction, is examined in relation to Poland’s current Energy Policy up to 2040, including its amendments.
