An initiative of the Centre for Economics of Climate Change team, the first Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) at our University, was organized between October 23-28, 2023, entitled "Open Innovation Lab: Using design thinking to solve regional challenges of climate change".
The theme of BIP was inspired by the future transformation of regions due to climate change. We invited lecturers and students from the University of Belgrade, Óbuda University in Budapest and Silesian University in Opava to participate in the BIP. They shared their insights on the transformation they are already experiencing in their regions concerning mitigation and/or adaptation to climate change.
On the first day of their stay at our University, students participated in group activities designed to support their later teamwork (team building & ice-breakers). The inspiration for the project theme came from meetings with renowned scientists and experts during the 1st International Conference on Economics of Climate Change between October 23-24, 2023, as well as workshops at Kato Science Corner (October 25, 2023). During the workshop, BIP participants were introduced to the design thinking method and the possibilities of applying artificial intelligence in the search for data on the economic impacts of climate change (link to workshop schedule). Participants continued working on our campus over the next few days of BIP, developing and refining their projects.
The BIP program also featured time for sightseeing in Katowice, learning about the history of Upper Silesia and networking.
The event was prepared by the Centre for Economics of Climate Change team including: Prof. Monika Wieczorek-Kosmala, Ph.D., Prof. Dominika Bochańczyk-Kupka, Ph.D., Anna Losa, Ph.D., with the support of Prof. Renata Pęciak, Ph.D., Economics program director. The workshop at Kato Science Corner was led by Tomasz Jastrząb, D.Sc., (Technicenter Ltd.) and Prof. Mario Carrassi (University of Bari Aldo Moro). The BIP program was dedicated to students of spatial economy, real estate, and all those interested in the problem of regional transformation in the face of climate change.
Third-grade pupils of the IV Liceum Ogólnokształcące z Oddziałami Dwujęzycznymi im. Stanisława Staszica in Sosnowiec also attended the "Open Innovation Lab" workshop.
