Green Campus officially opened at UE Katowice

On 23 June 2026, as part of the 2nd BAUHAUS4EU Forum, the official opening of the BAUHAUS4EU Green Campus space took place at the University of Economics in Katowice. The newly arranged space on the University campus was created with the entire academic community in mind. The inauguration was attended by representatives of the authorities of the University of Economics in Katowice, led by HM the Rector prof. dr hab. inż. Celina M. Olszak, representatives of the city and the region, representatives of partner universities of the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance, students, doctoral students, members of the academic community, and regional partners.

The ceremony began with the symbolic opening of the Green Campus by HM the Rector prof. dr hab. inż. Celina M. Olszak. After the entrance was unveiled, participants were invited into the new space, where the next part of the event took place. The artistic setting of the inauguration was provided by the Choir of the University of Economics in Katowice, conducted by Michał Brożek. During her speech, HM the Rector emphasised that the BAUHAUS4EU Green Campus is a place designed for the entire academic and regional community. It is intended to support integration, cooperation, learning, meetings with partners from Poland and abroad, as well as rest and conversations surrounded by greenery.

The new space was inspired by the values of the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance: resilience, inclusiveness, sustainability, and beauty. Of particular importance is the fact that the idea of the Green Campus grew out of the academic community. The idea originated among students and was then developed by employees of the University of Economics in Katowice, who co-created and implemented this concept.

The guests gathered at the inauguration were welcomed by HM the Rector prof. dr hab. inż. Celina M. Olszak and the Chancellor of the University, Paweł Kadłubiak, who emphasised the importance of creating open, friendly, and inspiring academic spaces that support dialogue, cooperation, and the idea of sustainable development.

This is a place created with learning, cooperation, dialogue, and meetings with partners from Poland and across Europe in mind. Today, we are opening a new chapter. We are inaugurating a space that will continue to develop and evolve, just like our Alliance, which is constantly strengthening and expanding its activities. The fact that this inauguration is taking place during the 2nd BAUHAUS4EU Forum in Katowice, bringing together representatives of 10 universities from 9 countries who are jointly shaping the future of our European University, gives it special significance. The Green Campus reflects the vision and values that form the foundation of the BAUHAUS4EU initiative - a European University for resilient, inclusive, sustainable, and beautiful regions - said HM the Rector Celina M. Olszak.

Let us create this place in line with the values of the New European Bauhaus. Let it be sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful. For many months, we met, exchanged ideas, and worked together to find a symbolic way to capture the very essence of our Alliance and translate it into a visual language. Today, this space is a symbol of that commitment - emphasised Chancellor Paweł Kadłubiak.

The opening of the Green Campus was the first stage in the development of this space. Further activities are planned in the coming months and years, including the launch of the Economic Laboratory of Climate Education, the installation of permanent outdoor furniture, and the creation of coworking and collaboration areas. The space is intended to support both formal and informal education, research, and the engagement of the academic and regional community. The Green Campus will also serve as a living laboratory. The space is intended to support research and measurement activities carried out by the Centre for the Economics of Climate Change of UE Katowice, as well as initiatives related to climate education and building environmental awareness.

An important element of the inauguration was also the presentation of a mural created especially for this space by Wojciech Walczyk, a local artist associated with Katowice. The mural refers to the values of BAUHAUS4EU and to the windmill motif present in the visual identity of the Alliance. It symbolises change, energy, youth, transformation, and beauty, while at the same time highlighting the European dimension of academic cooperation.

Oliwia Chwist, President of the Student Parliament, also spoke on behalf of the student community. She emphasised that the Green Campus will be a place for meetings, learning, exchanging ideas, resting between classes, and building shared experiences.

A symbolic moment of the event was a joint artistic activity involving representatives of the partner universities of the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance. Together with the author of the mural, Wojciech Walczyk, representatives of the universities completed an image inspired by the BAUHAUS4EU logo. Each of them added their own element, which together formed a coherent whole — just as the universities co-creating the Alliance do.

The new space is a practical example of implementing the idea of the New European Bauhaus, combining functionality, care for the environment, aesthetics, and a sense of community. It is a place intended to foster learning, cooperation, inspiration, and the well-being of the academic and regional community.
