UE, and dr hab. Robert Wolny, prof. UE, presents the issue of Katowice as the European City of Science (ECS) and describes how private investors perceive the development of the city and the region in the context of this initiative. This is the first paper analyzing the city's preparations for its ECS function using Katowice as an example.
Katowice is the first city from Central and Eastern Europe to be awarded the title of European City of Science. The decision to honor Katowice brings numerous positive perspectives for the city and the region's development. Science Cities are innovative places, strongly developing their research potential and continuously improving the competencies of their employees. Development efforts, together with investments in science and technology, translate into increased efficiency and, consequently, increased economic development.
In “How can Katowice as European City of Science change Silesia region: Recognising perspectives of private companies,” the authors analyze the needs and preferences of private companies operating in Katowice and Metropolis GZM in the context of the European Science City title. They also examine the feelings of the representatives of the selected companies towards the city, their awareness of the awarded title and the benefits that follow. The analysis makes it possible to design ECS activities precisely in a way that supports the city and its economic development by taking action with crucial private businesses, among other things.
The researchers emphasize the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation between state institutions and private companies. They propose implementing ready-made solutions developed together with representatives of commercial companies that would help strengthen cooperation between private enterprises and public institutions within the ECS, thus creating more opportunities for all parties.
