In his article published in Learned Publishing titled "As of my last knowledge update: How is content generated by ChatGPT infiltrating scientific papers published in premier journals?", Dr. hab. Artur Strzelecki, Prof. of the University of Economics (Department of Informatics), created a list of journals where phrases characteristic of ChatGPT frequently appear. This suggests that publications in these journals may have been written using AI tools.
Phrases like “As of my last knowledge update,” “As an AI language model,” and “I don’t have access to real-time…” are just a few examples of the typical responses generated by ChatGPT. A complete database of analyzed phrases is available in Dr. Strzelecki’s article, which highlights that even in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals, there are sections that appear to have been mindlessly copied from OpenAI's tool interface.
The researcher focused only on articles that did not include any disclosure regarding the use of artificial intelligence in their creation. Among the analyzed materials, the phrase “regenerate response” — a command for rephrasing text suggested by ChatGPT — was also found. This indicates that some researchers may carelessly copy responses generated by the tool.
As AI tools used by authors to improve their language become increasingly accessible, their use to generate entire sections of content is becoming more common. These sections are then integrated into academic articles and published in scientific journals, according to Dr. Strzelecki’s analysis conducted at the University of Economics in Katowice.
