On April 25, 2025, at the CNTI Auditorium, a meeting was held with Leslie Kern and May East under the title "The Future of Cities: Innovation, Sustainability, and Social Justice in the Era of Artificial Intelligence".
The event was held under the patronage of: Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Communication prof. dr hab. Jerzy Gołuchowski, and Dean of the Faculty of Faculty of Spatial Economy and Regions in Transition, dr hab. Adam Drobniak, prof. UE.
The guests were welcomed by dr hab. Anna Adamus-Matuszynska, prof. UE from the Department of Market and Marketing Research.
The speakers addressed key topics related to the sustainable development of cities and the role of women in shaping urban spaces.
May East’s lecture focused on three major megatrends: the growth of the urban population, the increasing role of women in society, and the urgent need for decarbonization. She emphasized that cities must be designed with every social group in mind - especially women - which brings tangible benefits to all residents.
"Cities that work well for women, work well for everyone."
Leslie Kern, in her lecture, highlighted the importance of addressing everyday challenges related to transport and infrastructure - such as childcare needs or road safety - which can significantly affect access to different modes of transportation.
"If we do not address social issues in our pursuit of sustainability, we will not succeed."
The insights from both speakers offer strong inspiration for future actions towards creating fair, sustainable, and future-ready cities. May East and Leslie Kern stressed that urban design must consider the diverse needs of all inhabitants and be built on collaboration, leaving no social group behind. Joint efforts for sustainable development and gender balance can lead to more just and harmonious urban spaces.
The event was co-organized by the Metropolis GZM (Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia).
