The opening ceremony of the Silesian Science Festival 2022 was officially held at the Silesian Planetarium on Saturday, December 3. The event was attended by representatives of national and local government authorities, as well as authorities of universities co-organizing ŚFN. The University of Economics in Katowice was represented by Her Magnificence Rector Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Science and Academic Staff Development Prof. Maciej Nowak, Ph.D., and Director of Scientific Excellence Office Łukasz Korach, Ph.D.
The ceremony began with speeches by representatives of Silesian authorities and universities co-organizing the Festival. This was followed by a debate on how space exploration can contribute to improving living conditions on Earth. Łukasz Lamża, Ph.D., moderated the discussion with the participation of experts in the field.
Participants in the debate included:
- Prof. Grzegorz Wrochna – President of the Polish Space Agency,
- Associate Professor Agata Daszkowska-Golec, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Silesia in Katowice,
- Prof. Mark McCaughrean – astrophysicist, Science and Exploration Advisor at the European Space Agency (ESA),
- Sławosz Uznański – scientist and doctor of electronics currently working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the only Pole selected to the ESA astronaut reserve.
