Address on behalf of the promoted

On behalf of the promoted doctors and habilitated doctors, a speech was delivered by dr hab. Aleksandra Nocoń:

Today’s ceremony - the celebration commemorating the anniversary of the inaugural lecture within the walls of the University - is for all of us an important annual event. However, for us, today’s University Day has a special dimension. It constitutes the culmination of a certain stage, the crowning of many years of academic work. At the same time, today’s ceremony encourages us to reflect on the path that brought us to this place. (...) It was a time in which we immersed ourselves in the fascinating world of science in order to discover, research, compare, experiment, organize phenomena, processes, and knowledge. At times this path was difficult; it led through winding valleys and bumps, but ultimately it brought us to our goal. (...) We treat this stage as a kind of commitment - a commitment to further research work, to methodological integrity, the courage to ask questions and to seek and formulate answers to them, responsibility for our words and the conclusions we formulate, which we address both to the world of science and also to the economy and public life. (...) The work of a scholar has its own specificity, which is not always visible from the outside. It consists not only of our publications, grants, and conference presentations, but above all of a long-term process of thinking, doubting, returning to the same research problems. It is work that requires patience and self-discipline from us, but also readiness to accept criticism - sometimes constructive, difficult, but necessary for the development of science. In economic sciences, an additional challenge is changeability: the dynamics of economic reality, which constantly verifies our hypotheses and forces us to update our conclusions. The path to obtaining academic degrees, in particular habilitation, is therefore a long and multidimensional process. It is not only meeting formal criteria and achieving a certain publication output, but also - as we, the newly promoted habilitated doctors today, will try to demonstrate - it is also proof of our academic maturity, research independence, and the ability to set new directions for research. Habilitation teaches humility toward the complexity of the phenomena studied, but at the same time strengthens in us a sense of responsibility for shaping academic debate and educating subsequent generations of researchers. It is a stage that closes a certain period of intensive improvement of one’s workshop, but also opens a new space of obligations toward the academic community. At this point, I would also like to address the newly promoted doctors. Please remember that today you are not closing a door. The University is opening new doors for you and creating a platform for you to continue your academic development. Economics, which is the core of our Alma Mater, is a special science. On the one hand, it is strongly rooted in theory, but on the other hand it directly touches everyday decisions, the process of managing resources by people, economic entities, institutions, and states. This means, however, that our academic work never has an exclusively academic character. Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of today’s promoted habilitated doctors and doctors, I would like to express here deep gratitude to everyone who accompanied us on this academic path, because this is our shared success.

In conclusion, dr hab. Aleksandra Nocoń thanked all those who accompanied the promoted doctors and habilitated doctors on the path of their academic development. She expressed gratitude to the University authorities, members of academic committees, as well as mentors and masters - both the official ones and the less visible ones—for support, trust, patience, and motivation. She also emphasized the importance of everyday cooperation with heads of departments, colleagues, and administrative staff who created conditions conducive to academic work. Special words of thanks were addressed to families and loved ones who supported the scholars at the cost of their own time and everyday sacrifices. On behalf of those promoted, she declared readiness for further work for the University, the development of scientific research, and educating subsequent generations, wishing the entire academic community prosperity and pride in their Alma Mater.

We extend our sincere congratulations and wish you further professional and academic success!
