National Center for Research and Development as part of the DUT Call 2022 competition

The primary objective of the project is to develop tools that enable urban planners to define and optimize the concept of 15-minute cities within urban districts. for Measure: FESL.10.26-Strengthening the just transition process in the region.

Raising public awareness among residents – students and employees in mining subregions of the Silesian Voivodeship – about the opportunities and possibilities arising from the just transition process. According to the Territorial Just Transition Plan (TPST), this includes the subregions of Katowice, Sosnowiec, Tychy, Bytom, Gliwice, Rybnik, and Bielsko-Biała.

Particular emphasis has been placed on raising interest in existing and new educational programs in the region that respond to current trends in the green and digital economy. The project also aims to strengthen ties with the region, which, while respecting its traditions and identity, is undergoing a transformation that will stimulate development and create attractive living and working conditions.

The project aims to encourage the region's residents, especially those who are choosing their education and career path, to link their education and future with their birthplace. The project activities are also indirectly targeted at stakeholders in the education system, local authorities, entrepreneurs, the scientific community, specialists, analysts, and labor market professionals to widely disseminate a positive message about the transformation process.

Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund

The project focuses on the specific objective of the "Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund" program, namely, creating space for research in the area of green finance, thereby addressing the concept of a "sustainable green metropolis." The issue of a just transition is significant from a regional perspective, as Silesia will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Just Transition Fund, among others.

The project aims to strengthen the scientific capabilities of our University by providing scientific support to its employees and involving them in existing projects, as well as initiating new ones, which is essential for achieving a broader scope of research.

This project aims to create a new, fully integrated and innovative study program in intercultural management. Project activities shall focus on coordinating and managing the program, and then developing rules and criteria for recruitment and admission, as well as integrated and standardized student services, graduation procedures, financial management, quality assurance, and European accreditation. Additionally, a joint strategy for promoting the program and the project itself will be developed.

The project aims to prepare personnel for a just energy transition, supporting the development of a green economy through research, training and adapting education to the needs of the modern energy market.

The goal of the project shall be achieved through:

  • Strengthening the scientific staff – support for the Department of Energy Transition staff, enabling research and competence development in the green economy and energy transition field.
  • Training and workshops – organization of lectures, workshops and internships for students to improve their knowledge and practical skills regarding just energy transition.
  • Knowledge and technology transfer – cooperation with the energy sector, including enterprises, to exchange knowledge on innovative energy solutions and adapt enterprises to the new realities of the energy market.

Project implementation will be supported by:

  • University of Economics in Katowice – which will provide scientific staff and infrastructure for the implementation of research and training.
  • Employees of the Department of Energy Transition – as crucial implementers of research and educational activities, working with energy companies and students.
  • Cooperation with energy companies – to share knowledge and create solutions tailored to the needs of the energy market and consumers.
  • External experts – the project intends to involve external experts and professionals, both national and foreign, who will conduct workshops for students and engage in research processes. It is planned to employ experts from the energy sector responsible for preparing and implementing workshop series and lectures on energy transition, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), and alternative energy sources such as nuclear and hydrogen energy.

The following tasks are planned for the project:

  1. Personnel for just transition – strengthening the scientific staff of the University of Economics in Katowice, conducting research and scientific publications on energy transition.
  2. Electricity customers and users – examining the role of consumers in the energy transition process, including analysis of data related to energy use.
  3. Green transformation - creating a new educational offer and retrofitting laboratories to increase the quality and attractiveness of education related to the green economy.
  4. Retrofitting scientific laboratories - purchasing modern tools and equipment necessary for advanced research in the field of energy transition.  

The target group of the project is:

  • Department of Energy Transition staff – 6 people who will be directly involved in the implementation of research and development of their competencies in the field of energy transition.
  • Students of the University of Economics in Katowice - a total of 460 people, including 400 lecture participants, 40 workshop participants and 20 internship participants who shall learn about the green economy and energy transition.

The project results that shall be achieved include:

  • Strengthening the scientific staff - improving the skills of scientists through participation in international and national conferences, workshops and study visits. This shall be the key to further development of energy transition research.
  • Increasing student competence – 460 students shall attend lectures, workshops and internships, allowing them to gain practical skills in the green economy and energy transition.
  • Scientific publications conducting scientific research resulting in numerous publications, including papers on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and decarbonization.
  • Upgrading teaching infrastructure – retrofitting scientific laboratories with up-to-date computer equipment and software, enabling advanced research, classes and analysis related to energy transition.
  • Cooperation with the energy sector – establishing cooperation with energy companies in research and knowledge transfer, resulting in a more effective energy transition in the region.

It targets university graduates and young entrepreneurs, in particular, offering support in acquiring innovative and entrepreneurial skills, and also promoting an attitude of openness to digital transformation. The project is also intended to promote cooperation and exchange of experiences between participants and educational institutions and the private sector. The creation of an innovative and interactive course based on an e-learning platform is the expected result.
