Ecology or economics – determinants and the propensity of Polish people to energy transition

Project ManagerImplementation period Supporting unitFunding
dr Jakub Kubiczek30.05.2023 - 06.2025InternationalizationMetropolis GZM

The project "Ecology or economics – determinants and the propensity of Polish people to energy transition" aims to allow 5 doctoral students to carry out a joint scientific initiative, bringing together their interests and reflecting individual project members' skills.

Main research goal: identification of the determinants and the level of propensity of Polish people to the energy transition.

Secondary research goals:

  • assessment of the energy transition process in Poland in comparison with other countries of the European Union;

  • identification of factors influencing the decisions of Polish people as they pursue energy transition.

The project will enhance knowledge regarding the characteristics of society as energy consumers, important for policymakers and for assessing the impact of applied solutions, both from the household and business levels. Understanding the demand side of the energy market will enable better alignment of strategies and actions taken to implement energy transition plans, including Zielony Śląsk (Green Silesia).

The Understanding Green Finance project focuses on the specific goal of the "Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund" Program: to create a space for research in green finance and thus to address the concept of a "sustainable green metropolis." The impact of this project will be particularly significant for the Silesian Voivodeship, which will be one of the largest beneficiaries of the green transformation through the Just Transition Fund.

The project's goal is to enhance our University's scientific capabilities, with a key focus on the involvement of our staff. By providing them with academic support and involving them in existing and new ventures, we aim to expand the scope of our research significantly. This will enable us to benefit from economies of scale through joint publications, participation in discussions on green finance, and the development of collaborative research projects. The planned activities for our guests will help to professionalize the research workshop and promote the internationalization of scientific work, with our employees playing a crucial role in these efforts.

The main activities involve cooperation with world-class scientists from leading European centers, including Prof. Ismail Erturk, Prof. Thomas Walker, and Prof. Johannes Jager. In addition to lectures and workshops, the invited scientists will participate in mentoring projects carried out by the academic staff of our University and guest representatives of other universities of the Silesian Voivodeship.

Reducing its level in the region is a task that requires numerous activities dedicated to a variety of social groups. Young people are particularly important as they enter independent life and should be aware of the problems associated with the rapidly developing generative technology (artificial intelligence) and related risks. Education in this area is vital and requires appropriate innovative educational methods. This project is the answer to that need. Thanks to the cooperation with an internationally acclaimed scientist, modern teaching methods incorporating artificial intelligence will be introduced, and awareness and knowledge of cybersecurity will increase.
