On May 19, 2025, the 1st National Scientific Seminar from the series "With ROSS on Finance" was held at the University of Economics in Katowice. Winners of the Stephen A. Ross Award in the field of financial economics: Professor Lubos PASTOR, Professor Pietro VERONESI, organized by the Department of Corporate Finance and Insurance in cooperation with members of the "Start-up" Scientific Club operating at the Department.
The seminar, organized in a hybrid formula, became a unique platform for the exchange of experiences and views on the impact of the achievements of the Stephen A. Ross Award Winners on the development of financial economics and corporate finance. The event was also aimed at promoting research interests among students and young scientists.
The event was attended by over 90 participants, including from the Upper Silesian University named after Wojciech Korfanty, Częstochowa University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, University of Economics in Katowice, University of Economics in Krakow, University of Economics in Wrocław, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, University of Silesia, University of Siedlce, University of Warsaw, WSB Merito Chorzów University and the Warsaw Institute of Banking. The presence of such a wide group gave the event a unique dimension - both substantive and environmental - making the seminar a genuine platform integrating the academic community around the subject of finance.
The seminar was inaugurated by dr hab. Joanna Błach, prof. UE, Head of the Department of Corporate Finance and Business Insurance and Chairwoman of the Seminar Organizing Committee Dr. Eng. Iwona Gorzeń-Mitka. In the panel part of the Seminar, led by Dr. Agnieszka Skręt-Bednarz, participants had the opportunity to listen to many inspiring speeches prepared by students of the University of Economics in Katowice under the substantive supervision of academic staff, presenting key issues related to the achievements of Stephen A. Ross and the Laureates of the Award bearing his name. Among other things, the profile and scientific achievements of Prof. Stephen A. Ross and the importance of the FARFE (Foundation for Advancement of Research in Financial Economics) mission in the development of research in the area of financial economics were presented. Particular attention was paid to the profiles and scientific achievements of Prof. Lubos Pastor and Prof. Pietro Veronesi - laureates of the Stephen A. Ross Award in 2024 - and their contribution to understanding contemporary market mechanisms. During the seminar, the Laureates' award-winning work entitled "Technological Revolutions and Stock Prices" was presented, which shows the relationship between technological revolutions and changes in stock prices in an innovative way. Participants had the opportunity not only to familiarize themselves with the key assumptions of this publication, but also to learn about the directions of scientific research inspired by its content.
The panel ended with an interactive summary, which not only made the substantive part of the seminar more attractive, but also engaged the participants in consolidating the acquired knowledge in an interesting way.
The second part of the seminar included a panel discussion entitled "The importance of the Laureates' achievements for financial economics and corporate finance", moderated by dr hab. Joanna Błach, prof. UEK. The event was attended by representatives of the academic community and business practice: dr hab. Anna Doś, prof. UEK from the University of Economics in Krakow, dr inż. Monika Sipa from Częstochowa University of Technology, Mateusz Zając, Regional Director of Economic Education Programs from Warsaw Institute of Banking, and Dr. Rafał Buła and Dr. Łukasz Szewczyk from University of Economics in Katowice. The discussion focused on the practical and theoretical dimensions of the achievements of the Stephen A. Ross Award Winners, its impact on the development of contemporary finance and the possibilities of implementing their achievements in economic education and scientific research. The panel was an important forum for the exchange of views between science and practice, emphasizing the importance of continuing the dialogue around contemporary challenges in the area of finance.
The seminar concluded with a summary led by Dr. Małgorzata Lipowicz, who emphasized the most important conclusions and inspirations from its individual parts.
The organization of the seminar was coordinated by the Organizing Committee led by Dr. Eng. Iwona Gorzeń-Mitka, supported by Dr. Małgorzata Lipowicz, Dr. Agnieszka Skręt-Bednarz and mgr. Krzysztof Pałęga.
