Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) – A Student Guide

The University of Economics in Katowice supports innovation and the development of digital skills, recognising the educational value of using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools responsibly and ethically. The following key principles apply to the preparation of coursework (essays, projects and presentations) and dissertations.

  • AI as a supporting tool: Artificial intelligence should enhance the creative process, but must not replace critical thinking, personal reflection or independent creativity.
  • AI-generated plagiarism: This refers to the use of content generated by AI without appropriate acknowledgement or attribution. Such practice is prohibited.

Key principles for the ethical use of AI

  1. Always consult your lecturer or supervisor: Generating all or part of an assignment without the prior approval of your lecturer or dissertation supervisor is prohibited.
  2. Duty to disclose: If you use AI, you must clearly describe how and to what extent it has been used in a separate section of your work.
  3. Full responsibility: You bear sole responsibility for the content of your work. You are required to verify the accuracy of information provided by AI and comply with copyright law.
  4. Data protection: When using AI tools, you must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Never upload non-public or sensitive data to publicly available AI tools.

What are the consequences of breaching these rules?

Undisclosed use of AI, or use without the lecturer’s approval, may be treated as plagiarism. In such cases:

  • The work may receive a failing grade.
  • You may be required to retake the assessment or seminar.
  • Disciplinary sanctions may be imposed in accordance with the University’s study regulations.

Support and development

The University promotes creative approaches to learning by providing access to modern AI platforms, organising training sessions and supporting student projects that make use of artificial intelligence. We encourage you to experiment with AI as a source of inspiration while maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity.

Order No. 92-25 of July 16, 2025, of the Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice, on the rules governing students’ use of generative artificial intelligence when writing assignments and final dissertations.
