Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) – A Guide for Students

The University of Economics in Katowice supports innovation and the development of digital competencies, recognizing the educational value of the responsible and ethical use of GAI tools. The key guidelines that apply to the preparation of course assignments (essays, projects, presentations) and final dissertations are presented below.

  • GAI is a support tool: Artificial intelligence is supposed to enhance the creative process, but it cannot replace critical thinking, personal reflection, and independent creativity.
  • Technological plagiarism: This refers to the use of content generated by GAI without proper attribution or acknowledgment of authorship. Such action is prohibited.

Key guidelines for the ethical use of GAI:

  1. Always consult with your instructor: It is prohibited to generate work, in whole or in part, without the prior consent of the teacher or supervisor.
  2. Disclosure requirement: If you use GAI, you must thoroughly describe how and to what extent you used it in a separate section of your work.
  3. Full responsibility: You are solely responsible for the content of your work. It is your responsibility to review the accuracy of the information provided by GAI and to comply with copyright laws.
  4. Data protection: When using GAI tools, be sure to comply with GDPR. Never upload non-public or sensitive data to public tools.

What are the consequences of violating the guidelines?

Any use of GAI that has not been disclosed or approved by the instructor may be considered plagiarism. In such a case:

  • Your work may receive a failing grade.
  • You may be required to retake the course or seminar.
  • You may face disciplinary sanctions according to the rules and regulations of studies.
