EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 scientific conference [coverage]

On July 15, 2022, in conjunction with the EuroScience Open Forum 2022 (ESOF) held in Leiden, an accompanying conference was held at the International Congress Center in Katowice, Poland. This event also constituted a ceremonial acceptance of Katowice receiving the title of European City of Science 2024. The conference was attended by representatives of the University of Economics in Katowice led by Her Magnificence Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc.

EuroScience

EuroScience (European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology) is the organizer of the European City of Science. The association brings together more than 4,500 leading thinkers, innovators, journalists and education representatives from around the world. 

This year's tenth edition of the European City of Science will be held in Leiden, the Netherlands, from July 13 to 16, 2022. 

ESOF Katowice

On July 15, 2022, in conjunction with the EuroScience Open Forum 2022 (ESOF) held in Leiden, an accompanying event - ESOF Katowice Regional Site - was held at the International Congress Center in Katowice, Poland. This conference also constituted the acceptance of Katowice receiving the title of European City of Science 2024. This title enables, among other things, an increased involvement of residents, the scientific community and the region in general in finding solutions to local problems and strengthening the ability to raise funds for the implementation of plans to invest in local science.

Katowice Consortium - City of Science 

The conference was organized by the consortium of universities "Katowice - City of Science", together with EuroScience and the City of Katowice. The consortium includes: the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice, the Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, Silesian University of Technology, Medical University of Silesia, the University of Economics in Katowice and the University of Silesia  in Katowice.

Welcome Reception

The event was preceded by a Welcome Reception held on the eve of the conference at the University of Silesia in Katowice. The purpose of the meeting, attended by representatives of university authorities and those involved in conducting scientific research, was to integrate and enable the establishment of contacts allowing future cooperation. The event was attended by the Vice-Rector for Science and Academic Staff Development Prof. Maciej Nowak, Ph.D, Dean of the Faculty of Management Prof. Wojciech Dyduch, Ph.D., and Director of the Scientific Excellence Office Łukasz Korach, Ph.D.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony began with the presentation of the promotional film "Katowice - City of Science". The film featured our Associate Professor Julia Włodarczyk, Ph.D. 

An official welcome was given by the ESOF Champions Anna Budzanowska, Ph.D., and Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, Ph.D., Rector of the University of Silesia in Katowice. 

The program included speeches by, but not limited to:

  • Bogumił Sobula - First Deputy Mayor of the City of Katowice, 
  • Jan Chrząszcz - Deputy Governor of Silesia, 
  • Prof. Michael Matlosz - Chairman of EuroScience, 
  • Wojciech Murdzek - Secretary of State, Ministry of Education and Science, the Government Plenipotentiary for the reform of the operation of research institutes,
  • Michał Wójcik - Minister - Member of the Council of Ministers
  • Paweł Poszytek, Ph.D. - Director General, Foundation for the Development of the Education System (FRSE), Polish National Agency of the Erasmus+ Programme and the European Solidarity Corps,
  • Jerzy Buzek - Member of the European Parliament, 
  • Łukasz Kohut - Member of the European Parliament, 
  • Kazimierz Karolczak, Chairman of the Board at the Metropolis of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie.

An important part of the opening ceremony were speeches by representatives of the authorities of the seven universities located in Katowice, associated in the consortium of universities "Katowice - City of Science". 

The first to speak was Her Magnificence Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc., who emphasized the following:

I am proud that Katowice, my city, is the first one in Central and Eastern Europe to receive the title of the European City of Science. The committee that awarded Katowice this title certainly recognized both the assets and values of the seven universities that make up the consortium. These universities may become accelerators of not only significant economic changes, but also social. I firmly believe that together we will all take advantage of our strengths (...) and that this title obtained by Katowice will become a milestone in the development of our city, and also the University that I represent. I believe in science. I believe that science will contribute to the development of Poland, as well as the whole of Europe.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of our University, among others: Vice-Rector for Science and Academic Staff Development Prof. Maciej Nowak, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Management Prof. Wojciech Dyduch, Ph.D., Dean of Doctoral School Prof. Artur Walasik, Ph.D., Head of Social Logistics Department Prof. Jacek Szołtysek, Ph.D, Sc.D., and Head of the Department of Demography and Economic Statistics Prof. Grażyna Trzpiot, Ph.D.  

The ceremony ended with speeches by the ESOF Champions.  

Our University at ESOF

The conference consisted of twelve, 75-minute stationary sessions, some of which were broadcast to Leidy (four sessions). It was attended by specialists from the universities forming the Katowice consortium of the European City of Science 2024, as well as invited guests, representing Polish and foreign scientific centers, business experts, cultural institutions and the media.

The University of Economics in Katowice was represented by:

  • Dean of the Faculty of Management Prof. Wojciech Dyduch, Ph.D., in the session: "Education for entrepreneurship - creativity that brings value";;

  • Head of the Department of Strategic and Regional Studies Associate Professor Adam Drobniak, Ph.D, in the session: "Science for local government"

  • Dean of Doctoral School Prof. Artur Walasik, Ph.D., in session: "Formal and legal side of organizing doctoral schools".

In addition, a promotional booth of our University and an exhibition devoted to scientific projects carried out at the University were present during the event.

ESOF2022 Closing Ceremony

During the closing ceremony of ESOF2022 in Leiden, the title of European City of Science 2024 was officially handed over to a delegation of Katowice universities, as well as local authorities. The ceremony was attended by Her Magnificence Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc., and Vice-Rector for Science and Academic Staff Development Prof. Maciej Nowak, Ph.D., among others.
