International project "DUST" has been launched, with our University as its partner

On February 1, 2023, work began on the "DUST" project – Democratising Just Sustainability Transitions. On behalf of the University of Economics in Katowice, the Project Leader is Associate Professor Adam Drobniak, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Strategic and Regional Research. The project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe Framework Program.

The DUST project is implemented by Technische Universiteit Delf, in cooperation with our University and:

  • Strathclyde University,
  • Universitat Zurich,
  • Nordregio,
  • Center for the Study of Democracy,
  • Branderburgische Technische Universitat,
  • Cottbus-Senftenberg,
  • Stichting Isocarp Institute Center of Urban Excellence,
  • Ooze V.O.F.,
  • Hela Sverige ska leva Norrbotten,
  • Agentsiya za Regionalno Ikonomischesko Razvitie,
  • Stiftung Wohlfahrtspflege Brandenburg,
  • "KADRA" Trade Union Alliance (Porozumienie Związków Zawodowych "KADRA").

The project aims to increase citizen involvement in sustainable transformation efforts in coal regions, particularly listening to the voice of uninvolved communities from structurally vulnerable regions dependent on energy-intensive industries.

Innovative research methods with citizen participation will be used to understand the determinants of participation in sustainable decision-making. The research will also allow for the creation of recommendations related to increasing inclusive public involvement in the transformation of coal regions.

The DUST – Regional Futures Literacy Labs experiments also assume the use of a hybrid design and digital tools format. Meanwhile, the DUST Transition Academy, for which our University is responsible, implies educational, informational and inclusive activities aimed at various stakeholder sustainable transformation groups, among other things.

In the project, the University of Economics in Katowice is represented by Associate Professor Adam Drobniak, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Strategic and Regional Research.

The project is funded by the Horizon Europe Program. The project will take three years to complete.
