International Research Symposium in Service Management 2023 [coverage]

Between June 13-16, the "International Research Symposium in Service Management" was held in the Advanced Information Technology Center (CNTI) Auditorium. The organizer of the event was Jay Kandampully, Ph.D., of Ohio State University, USA, and the co-organizer of this year's edition was our University's Department of Consumer Research. The symposium was officially launched by Her Magnificence Rector Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc., and the entire event was conducted by Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D.

The "International Research Symposium in Service Management" spanned a total of four days and focused on the role of services in attaining sustainable economic development and social well-being.

June 13, 2023

Methodological workshops for young scientists led by experienced professors from international universities were held on the symposium's first day. The assembled guests were warmly welcomed by Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D., and Jay Kandampully, Ph.D., who then gave the floor to the speakers.

The speakers that day were:

  • Srikanth Beldona, Ph.D. – "An overview of the research process",
  • Joan Ball, Ph.D. – "The art of developing a compelling research narrative",
  • Byron Keating, Ph.D. - "Building better academic arguments through research and writing"
  • Jay Kandampully, Ph.D. – "Building and maintaining healthy research collaborations"
  • Jay Kandampully, Ph.D., Byron Keating, Ph.D., Srikanth Beldona, Ph.D., Joan Ball, Ph.D., Yuksel Ekinci, Ph.D., Prof. Marzena Czarnecka, Ph.D. – "Panel discussion on publishing in academic journals".

June 14, 2023

The official opening ceremony took place on the next day of the symposium. The guests gathered in the CNTI Auditorium were welcomed by Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D. At the same time, Her Magnificence Rector Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc., officially opened the international symposium.

This was followed by a discussion, with the speakers that day being:

  • Prof. Tymoteusz Doligalski – "Platform Canvas. Business Model of Digital Platforms",
  • Grzegorz Lot and Prof. Marzena Czarnecka, Ph.D. – "Services on energy market - do we really need it?".

After the discussion, participants were able to take part in the following thematic sessions:

  • New technologies in the service sector:

    • Alexander Kies, Stefanie Paluch;
    • Alexander Knight, John Byrom, Athanasia Daskalopolou, Sahar Karimi.

  • Contemporary challenges for the service sector:

That day of the international symposium began with presentations in the CNTI Auditorium. The speakers that day were:

  • Prof. Stephane Ganassali – "Analysing CGC textual data to assess service quality and sustainability";
  • Mateusz Hilgner – "E-commerce, not air-commerce: how smart packaging can help avoid transporting air and benefit customers".

Additional thematic sessions followed:

  • Sustainability in the service sector;

Also that day, a special panel discussion "Sustainability challenges in the service sector and their consequences for individual consumption," moderated by Prof. Jolanta Zrałek, Ph.D., was held. The panel included:

  • Szymon Kowalski, Vice-President of Polish Wind Energy Association and ReSource Poland Hub;
  • Magdalena Hilgner, Manager and Legal Advisor EY Law;
  • Michał Szalast-Dao Quy, Leader of the Sustainable Finance Section BNP Paribas;
  • Michał Wyszyński, President of the Management Board, co-owner of Oxygen Forest Poland;
  • Mateusz Hilgner, Senior Operations Manager in Amazon Fulfillment Poland;
  • Prof. Aleksandra Burgiel-Szewc, Ph.D.

June 16, 2023

The day began with a panel discussion entitled "Publishing in academic journals," featuring Jay Kandumpully, Ph.D.

Thematic sessions followed:
