Letter from Her Magnificence Rector to the academic community

Dear Academic Community,

At the beginning of each new academic year, there comes a time to reflect on what is behind us and think of where we are going.

Recent years have been extremely difficult for the entire community of the University of Economics in Katowice. We have had to deal with enormous challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the vicious war in Ukraine, and the escalating energy and economic crisis. The limited ability to meet, together with online classes, made it difficult to integrate and negatively impacted the formation of interpersonal relationships. I believe that despite these many adversities, we showed an exceptional amount of empathy, did not take any easy ways out and were not driven by stereotypes. Above all, we believed in our inner power, as well as in the power of science. We have seen that it is through science and new competencies that we can change not only ourselves but also our city, region and country as a whole.

We have made sure that our essential stakeholders, i.e. the Students, are content and enjoy their academic experience at our Alma Mater. I am delighted that from this academic year, we will once again have the opportunity to meet within the walls of the University and experience the immense value of studying in person on campus.

The past academic year was a year of celebration of the 85th anniversary of our Alma Mater. This beautiful anniversary coincided with Katowice winning the title of the European City of Science 2024. Each of our activities has been guided not only by our anniversary motto "Power of unity", but also by the conviction that through science, new industry and technology we are able to co-create space and a unique environment that will draw entrepreneurial people. Our achievements to date lead us to believe that through economics, management, finance, accounting, information technology and logistics, we can play an important role in the development of an innovative and competitive economy and new industry.

This aforementioned unity in thinking and action could not have been achieved if it were not for our sensitivity. Because Sensitivity is seeing You, Us and the Other, accompanied by a whole range of dilemmas, but also joys and successes. It is dialogue and overcoming barriers together, it is the ability to accept our differences and varying opinions with respect for the law and academic values.

I would like to thank all the Staff, Students, Doctoral Students and our Stakeholders for this beautiful gift – for the sensitivity and unity we have bestowed on each other. This allows me to look to the future with confidence and optimism.

At the beginning of the new academic year 2022/2023, I wish you, and especially the Students about to start their first exploration of science, fulfillment, and success, but above all sensitivity and openness to the others – this is where our true power lies.
