Mural at the University of Economics in Katowice! [video]

During the 2nd BAUHAUS4EU Forum at the University of Economics in Katowice, the official unveiling of a mural inspired by the vision of the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance took place. Created on the University campus, the artwork stands as a symbol of UE Katowice’s commitment to this international initiative and its pride in co-creating a shared European future.

The mural was designed by Wojciech Walczyk, an artist known for numerous mural projects across the Silesia region. Created specifically for the Green Campus area, it has become one of the most recognizable features of the newly opened part of the campus. The artwork draws inspiration from the concept "BAUHAUS4EU - A European University for Resilient, Sustainable, Inclusive and Beautiful Regions." It reflects the Alliance’s core values - beauty, inclusiveness, and sustainability - through a cohesive, integrated, and symbolic visual language. The mural tells a story of change, energy, regional transformation, and European academic cooperation.

A key element of the composition is the windmill, the mural’s dominant visual motif and an integral part of the BAUHAUS4EU logo. As a form associated with wind, it symbolizes change, youth, freshness, and beauty. At the same time, it represents the energy and transformation that drive regional development. This motif gains additional significance through the mural’s location at the entrance to the Green Campus of the University of Economics in Katowice, where the Laboratory of Economic Climate Education will be established. In this way, the artwork highlights the connection between the Alliance’s vision and contemporary environmental challenges.

The mural’s composition was conceived as a symbolic journey from dynamism and movement toward harmony, order, and reflection. The first section, located within the tunnel leading to the Green Campus, serves as an initiation space - a realm of rhythm, energy, and transformation. The beginning of the composition evokes the image of scorched earth, from which a new form, new energy, and the possibility of renewal gradually emerge. Young people - students - appear in this part of the mural. Their focused and conscious presence symbolizes the calm that accompanies the process of change. Transformation is not depicted literally, but rather through the rhythm of the imagery, the arrangement of forms, color transitions, and the atmosphere of the space. As visitors move through the tunnel, they experience changes in light, color, and mood, reflecting the very essence of transformation.

Upon leaving the tunnel and entering the Green Campus, the composition opens onto a new scene. One of the depicted figures is a woman symbolizing Europe - an embodiment of culture, beauty, and civilization. Her presence, integrated into the rhythm and serenity of the composition, presents regional transformation as part of a broader European process. The mural therefore tells a story not only about a place, but also about our shared responsibility for Europe’s future.

The project also has a strong environmental dimension. The mural was created using durable and responsible materials, including photocatalytic paints. In doing so, it combines artistic expression with care for the environment, embodying the values of the New European Bauhaus: harmony between functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.

The official unveiling of the mural took place on 23 June 2026 during the inauguration of the Green Campus as part of the 2nd BAUHAUS4EU Forum. The event was attended by representatives of the authorities of the University of Economics in Katowice, led by HM the Rector prof. dr hab. inż. Celina M. Olszak, representatives of the city and region, delegates from the Alliance’s partner universities, students, members of the academic community, and regional partners.

The mural will remain a permanent feature of the UE Katowice Green Campus - a place where art, climate education, ecology, European cooperation, and reflection on the future of regions come together.
