On September 21, during the meeting of the Council of the Silesian Universities Network (SUN), a vote was held. Professor Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations at the University of Economics in Katowice was appointed a new Chair of the SUN. His term begins on October 1 and will last for two years.
The position is currently held by Professor Marek Pawełczyk, Vice-Rector for Science and Development at the Silesian University of Technology.
The Silesian Universities Network (SUN), an initiative of nine public academic units in the Silesian region, was established to promote higher education not only in Silesia, but also nation- and world-wide.
This cooperation, established under a consortium agreement on May 4, 2010, brings together the largest public universities in Silesia:
- the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice,
- the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice,
- the University of Bielsko-Biala,
- the Academy of Physical Education,
- Silesian University of Technology,
- Częstochowa University of Technology,
- the Medical University of Silesia,
- the University of Economics in Katowice,
- the University of Silesia in Katowice.
Silesian Public Universities undertake a variety of different initiatives and activities centered around:
- internationalization of academic units,
- integration of social service programs for foreign students,
- programs to bring the culture of the region closer, development of lifelong learning priorities (especially aimed at raising the professional competence of the academic staff), as well as non-academic education dedicated to the community of the region,
- joint socio-cultural ventures aimed at international students as part of their studies at universities being part of SUN,
- joint training projects dedicated to the academic staff of European partner universities, with the aim of promoting and sharing the developed procedures and experience in internationalization.
