On August 24-26, 2022, on-site classes were held for NAWA scholarship holders who took part in remote summer language courses at our University. The intensive series of classes, divided into Polish and English language groups, was aimed at supporting Ukrainian students and doctoral students in smoother transition and quicker adaptation to their new environment, as well as allowed them to obtain sometimes brand new qualifications.
The University of Economics in Katowice organized free intensive language courses at B2 level (15 hours of classes per week). Participants holding the status of a student or a doctoral student of a Ukrainian university received an additional scholarship of PLN 1,500 per month. The course lasted 2 months and was conducted between July and August 2022. A total of 24 NAWA scholarship holders and 10 auditors participated in classes which were conducted by lecturers from our University’s Foreign Language Center.
The final two days of classes were held on-site in Katowice. Over that time, participants had the opportunity to take part in integration workshops, test their acquired language skills and other competencies gained during the course in practice, as well as get familiarized more with the local Silesian culture, the city and the University. During the closing ceremony, certificates were presented to the students by the Director of Internationalization, Edyta Lachowicz-Santos, on behalf of the Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations, Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D. The meeting was also a great opportunity to celebrate Independence Day of Ukraine together with our guests!
The course was implemented as part of the NAWA project "University of Economics in Katowice in Solidarity with Ukraine" under the NAWA "Solidarity with Ukraine" Program. The aim of the project is to provide academic support to students coming from the war-torn Ukraine. Our University stands together in solidarity with Ukrainian students, doctoral students and researchers, who constitute the largest group of foreign guests studying and working with us.
In addition to language courses, and as part of the project, two doctoral students from Ukraine have been under the guidance of our University’s academics, kindly providing their supervision, so that the young researchers can continue with their scientific work. Psychological and legal assistance has also been provided to all scholarship holders.
The project was implemented by the University of Economics’ Internationalization with the support of Foreign Language Center and Doctoral School.
