With deep sorrow, we have received the news of the passing of
Professor
Jean Paelinck
One of the most eminent European scholars,
a long-time Professor of Theoretical Spatial Economics
at Erasmus University Rotterdam,
the founder of "spatial econometrics",
and an honorary doctor of our University.
He was associated with the Faculty of Applied Economics at the University of Cambridge as well as with many academic institutions, including the Universities of
Liège, Lille, Namur, Paris, and the Université Catholique de Louvain.
A thinker and researcher,
author of numerous publications and textbooks in the field of spatial econometrics,
particularly econometric methods applied to regional science.
An expert and advisor to the United Nations, the European Union,
and other international bodies concerned with economic and regional development.
Honoured with the highest academic titles, including seven honorary doctorates
and the prestigious Order of the Netherlands Lion.
A scientist whose name was given to an award by the Regional Science Association International
to recognise outstanding achievements in spatial econometrics.Professor Jean Paelinck has left behind a great legacy in his extensive academic output,
but also a living heritage in the scientific paths of his students and collaborators,
who continue to draw inspiration from his work
to better understand the spatial intricacies of economic life.
