On Monday, November 2, 2026, our Welcome Point hosted the first World Cafe event of the new academic year. It brought together students, Uni Buddy program participants, and the Internationalization Office staff.
Slavic Traditions and the Mexican Día de los Muertos
The main theme of the November edition of World Cafe was traditional customs associated with commemorating the dead in different cultures. The meeting began with a student presentation, which introduced Polish customs related to All Saints’ Day, particularly the tradition of visiting cemeteries, decorating graves with flowers, and lighting candles.
Next, students from Mexico presented the traditions, costumes, and customs associated with Día de los Muertos, demonstrating how the memory of departed loved ones is cherished in their country.
Participants from other countries, including Egypt, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Spain, also joined the discussion and spoke about the customs in their respective countries. They also shared their observations and impressions from visiting Polish cemeteries on November 1.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, learn about different cultural perspectives, and reflect on how the memory of loved ones is honored in various parts of the world.
Papel Picado Workshop and Mexican treats
The handicraft workshop was the second part of the program where participants learned about the Mexican art of decorative paper cutting - Papel Picado. Under the guidance of Pamela, a Uni Buddy program volunteer, her friends, and the Welcome Point team, colorful and intricately cut designs were created. Thanks to the dedication of Pamela and her friends, World Cafe participants also had the opportunity to try Pan de Muerto - a traditional Mexican sweet yeast bread prepared for Día de los Muertos.
Stay tuned for upcoming events!
We thank all participants for their active involvement, openness, and for sharing their experiences. We encourage anyone interested in participating in future World Cafe sessions to regularly follow the Welcome Point na Instagramie, where information about upcoming dates and topics will be posted.
