World Consumer Rights Day 2024

The entire community of the University of Economics in Katowice will celebrate World Consumer Rights Day on March 14th of this year. This is a shared celebration for all of us because each of us is a consumer. This year’s theme will be: “Fair and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Consumer Relations.” The event will be accompanied by a competition dedicated to current students and doctoral students of our University. We warmly invite you to participate.

Celebrations

The aim of World Consumer Rights Day is to deepen consumer and entrepreneurial awareness among students and graduates. On this day, consumer organizations remind all market participants of their rights and obligations. The event will take place in the CNTI Auditorium.

Program of this Year's Event

The theme of this year’s event is “Fair and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Consumer Relations,” which addresses current challenges faced by both consumers and entrepreneurs today.

The solemn opening of the celebrations will be attended by Her Magnificence Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc., Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice, and Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations.

The program of the event will be as follows:

  • 9:00-9:05 - welcoming the participants, Jolanta Zrałek, Prof. UE,
  • 9:05-9:15 - solemn opening, Prof. Celina M. Olszak, Ph.D., D.Sc., Rector of the University of Economics in Katowice, and Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D., Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations,
  • 9:15-10:30 - panel discussion, moderator: Jolanta Zrałek, Prof. UE
  • participants: representative of UOKiK, Jan Kozak, Prof. UE, 2 founders of the Lex Cultura foundation specializing in consumer rights, and others,
  • 10:30-10:45 - audience questions and summary of the panel discussion, moderator: Jolanta Zrałek, Prof. UE, technical support: Izabela Sowa, Ph.D.,
  • 10:45-11:05 - announcement of the winners of the competition for students and doctoral students and award presentation,
  • 11:05-11:10 - closing remarks and invitation to workshops, Prof. Sławomir Smyczek, Ph.D.,
  • 11:30-12:30 - workshops on “Consumer Safety Online,” conducted by trainers from the Lex Cultura Foundation (limited number of places, registration required via the registration form).

Competition

The organizer of the competition aimed at current students and doctoral students of the University of Economics in Katowice on the occasion of World Consumer Rights Day is the International Business Scientific Circle operating at the Consumption Studies Department.

The prepared material may address one or several of the following tasks:

  • indicating the importance of knowledge of consumer rights and institutions implementing consumer policy,
  • demonstrating how consumer rights are protected in the market,
  • showing examples of violations/non-compliance with consumer rights,
  • indicating the premises and principles of sustainable consumption,
  • showing the impact of artificial intelligence on consumption and how it supports or threatens consumer rights.

The competition involves preparing a short informational film in Polish or English on consumer rights. The material may only be prepared individually and must be sent by email from February 19th to March 8th to the address: ibresearchclub22@gmail.com. At the same time, the link to the shared video on the shared drive must be sent through the registration form.

A specially selected jury will award first, second, and third-place prizes as well as honorable mentions. The prizes for the top three places are monetary:

  • first-place prize - PLN 1,500
  • second-place prize - PLN 1,000
  • third-place prize - PLN 500
