Historical Background of the Department
The Department of Commercial Law (until 2016 known as the Department of Law) has been part of the organizational structure of the University of Economics since the university's inception. Since 1992, the Department of Law operated within the Faculty of Economics, and from 2003, it became part of the Faculty of Finance and Insurance (currently the Faculty of Finance).
The Head of the Department was dr hab. Jan Wojtyła, prof. UE, who held the position until October 2012.
From November 2012, the position of Head of the Department was held by prof. dr hab. Antoni Witosz.
Currently, the Department of Business Law is headed by prof. dr hab. Aleksander Witosz.
On October 1, 2016, the Department of Law merged with the Department of Insurance, which resulted in a name change to the Department of Law and Insurance. Until October 2019, the Department included the Insurance Section, headed by dr hab. Radosław Pacud, prof. UE.
The Department currently employs a total of 10 staff members, including: one full professor, one UE Katowice professor, and six PhD holders.
The Department was also home to the Research Center for Social Dialogue in Employment, headed by dr hab. Jan Wojtyła, prof. UE.
Scientific Profile of the Department
The scientific and research profile of the Department is shaped by the research interests of its staff, who carry out projects both individually and in research teams. The research undertaken by the Department is interdisciplinary in nature and focuses on the legal and economic aspects of business restructuring and bankruptcy, consumer bankruptcy, labor law and employment policy, and social security.
Educational Profile of the Department
The staff of the Department conduct classes at all levels of full-time and part-time studies, as well as postgraduate studies, across the Faculty of Finance, the Faculty of Economics, and the Faculty of Management. The Department’s educational offer also includes courses taught in English and German, such as "Business Law" and "Setting up a Business".
Cooperation with External Stakeholders
The Department’s staff collaborate with external stakeholders in both research and expert capacities. Scientific cooperation is primarily reflected in the staff's involvement in academic committees and scientific associations.
International Cooperation of the Department
In both scientific research and teaching, the Department of Business Law cooperates with numerous academic institutions in Poland and abroad. International collaboration includes, among others:
