Research on Climate Change confirms the imperative to maintain global temperatures under 2°C and undertake efforts to limit the rise to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels to avert extreme climate hazards. This requires global annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to be halved by 2030 and reduced to net zero by 2050. In order to reach this objective, policymakers have launched initiatives at global and country levels to align socio-economic incentives towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. Among those, carbon markets represent an essential element in achieving climate targets by attributing a price to carbon emissions, thus internalizing the climate externality into production and consumption decisions. They also play an important role in enhancing climate ambition can we avoid its by increasing efficiency gains and lowering the marginal cost of abatement. The world needs a rapid transition to clean, renewable energy to address the issues of air pollution, climate, and energy security.

Today, countries must choose and implement new technologies in the energy sector or use existing low-carbon technologies such as nuclear energy. Technological changes have social, political, economic, and legal significance. The debate on the energy transition is essential for the economy and society. It can also be studied regionally, nationally, continentally, and globally.

The conference will be held in Katowice, the capital of Silesia - a Polish coal-mining region. The energy transition of Poland means, above all, the transition of Silesia. Linking the energy sector with the economy and society in Silesia is a challenge for the energy transition.

Energy justice is essential for the success of the energy transition and addressing the global energy access problem. It involves a comprehensive study of the energy sector that enables the integration of research across multiple areas, rather than focusing too narrowly on specific topics. Energy justice identifies areas where the energy system can be improved to deliver fair outcomes for all stakeholders, including vulnerable and marginalized communities. The aim of the conference is to provide a platform for international researchers to debate the issues surrounding energy transition and energy justice. The debate will cover the legal and economic aspects of the energy sector in the global, European, and Polish contexts.
