About the project

The "Household attitudes towards 'green' investments" project is aimed at supporting young scientists in conducting scientific research by financing the costs related to the collection, processing and analysis of empirical data, including disseminating the results of the research in the national and international scientific community and among residents and entrepreneurs operating in the Metropolis GZM area.

This research primarily focuses on understanding the attitudes and preferences of GZM residents towards "green" investments in two main contexts. The first one is about how households act as investors in "green" infrastructure (like solar panels). The second context aims to identify the attitudes of households when they act as citizens-recipients of "green" infrastructure provided by local government units. The study also aims to determine the willingness of households to accept the costs associated with the transition to a "green" economy. In this regard, it is essential to address the question of whether households support green investments, considering the potential for additional financial burdens.

The research task will be conducted by dr Marcin Tomecki,  and involves the following activities:

  1. analysis of relevant literature (national and international) covered by the research task;
  2. development of original scientific research on the intertemporal preferences of residents of Metropolis GZM;
  3. preparation and analysis of statistical data collected as part of the research task;
  4. presentation of research results at renowned national and international scientific conferences;
  5. preparation of a scientific paper presenting the results of the research;
  6. popularization of research results among residents of Metropolis GZM (e.g., in the form of public lectures, participation in popular science events, etc.).

The project coordinator is dr hab. Monika Foltyn-Zarychta, prof. UE. This project is part of the "ECOnomics4Climate III" cluster project implemented by Prof. Foltyn-Zarychta, with the support of Internationalization.

The "Household attitudes towards 'green' investments" project has been co-financed by the Metropolis GZM within the framework of the "Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund" program for years 2022-2024. The total grant amount is PLN 32,535.00.

Project implementation period: March – November 2025.

Key findings from the research:
The research findings indicate that, primarily, household investments in photovoltaic installations remain at a relatively low level; therefore, it is necessary to develop new instruments to promote such investment projects.
In this context, it is worth emphasising that the research provides new insights into the relatively high propensity of households to invest in photovoltaics, as well as their positive views regarding the financial efficiency of such investments and their contribution to achieving energy independence. The results indicate a lack of knowledge among Polish households regarding the technical aspects of investing in photovoltaics and the schemes supporting such investments. In this regard, the research highlights the need for information campaigns and improved communication, which could help increase interest in such investments.
The research also indicated that financial obstacles constitute the main barrier for households investing in photovoltaic installations; therefore, it is essential to review the policy regarding forms of support for such investment projects. The research indicates that households regard grants as the most desirable form of support for investments in photovoltaics.
The study indicates that households primarily expect the creation of instruments that enhance the financial viability of such investments. It is therefore necessary to call for a review of existing financial support instruments to stimulate household investment activity, whilst these measures should be accompanied by parallel efforts to disseminate information about investment support programs.
The research findings may assist in the process of creating new investment support instruments, ensuring they meet the identified household needs, while highlighting the identified communication issues.

According to the project proposal regarding the dissemination of research findings in the form of academic publications, an article entitled "ATTITUDES OF HOUSEHOLDS AS ENTITIES INVESTING IN GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONENTS" has been prepared. This publication has been submitted to Scientific Papers of Silesian University of Technology – Organization & Management Series (ISSN 1641-3466). Scientific Papers of the Silesian University of Technology. Series: Organisation and Management is a journal on the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s list of scored journals. Currently, 70 points are awarded for publishing an article in this journal.
