The article describes the process of the gradual phase-out of mining in Poland, with particular emphasis on Silesia, and the concept of the “just transition,” whose aim is to protect jobs, provide support for workers in the mining sector, and create new development prospects for the region. It also shows how the transformation can become a driving force for the diversification of the regional economy, the development of new industries, and the creation of alternative development opportunities for cities and municipalities that for decades have been heavily dependent on coal.
In the Canary Media article, prof. Adam Drobniak is presented as one of the key experts involved in preparing and implementing the concept of the just transition in Silesia. As an economist, he co-created systemic solutions enabling the region’s gradual move away from coal while simultaneously safeguarding miners’ jobs and incomes. He participated in work on reports and strategies that became the basis for the national and regional transformation plan in force since 2021. The text also highlights his cooperation with public administration, trade unions, and industry, as well as the fact that the model developed in Silesia serves as a reference point for other coal regions in Europe.
